Muffuletta Sliders

It’s Mardi Gras season! One of my favorite foods from New Orleans is the muffuletta sandwich. It’s said it was created by Salvatore Lupo, an Italian immigrant and owner of Central Grocery, which is still operating in New Orleans. If you’re ever in Nola you have to get one! I tried it maybe three years ago and still think about that sandwich. The traditional version includes salami, ham, mortadella, Swiss, provolone and an olive salad. Central Grocery makes their olive salad with olives, celery, pickled cauliflower and carrot, oregano, garlic and olive oil. I made my olive salad with pickled things that I typically keep on hand, but you can mix it up with whatever you’ve got in your pantry!

Muffuletta Sliders, makes 12

Ingredients

  • 12 Hawaiian Rolls
  • 1/2 lb thinly sliced ham
  • 8-10 slices mortadella
  • 8-10 slices genoa salami
  • 8 slices provolone
  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 3 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup black olives
  • 1/2 cup manzanilla olives
  • 1/2 cup banana peppers
  • 1/3 cup roasted red peppers
  • 2 stalks celery, roughly diced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 clove minced garlic

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Make olive salad by combining all ingredients from black olives down in a food processor and pulsing 5-7 times. If you don’t have a food processor, you can just finely chop all ingredients and stir to combine.
  3. Slice hawaiian rolls in half and place bottom half in a 9×11 baking dish. Spread with mayo.
  4. Layer ham, then mortadella, then salami, then olive salad, then provolone, then top half of buns.
  5. Combine melted butter, garlic powder and oregano and brush over top of buns.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 5-10 minutes until cheese is melted.

I hate commenting before I make something…but your recipe was exactly what I was looking for – a warm Muffuletta slider based on the Hawaiian roll ham & cheese slider. It looks fabulous.

  2. Great recipe! If your life is super busy, you can find various olive salads already prepared in your grocery or deli stores. At least that is true here in Mardi Gras land!
