Pinwheels are kind of my MO. Need an easy appetizer? Grab a roll of crescent roll dough, a block of cream cheese and throw in whatever flavors you’re craving. Like perhaps, pesto and prosciutto? These little pinwheels are kind of like miniature pesto pizzas. Yum.
If anything you should just try mixing cream cheese and pesto. I’m dying to put this spread on a bagel. Now that I think of it, all of these ingredients would be so tasty on a bagel! I’ve used both proscuitto and salami in these pesto pinwheels and both turn out delicious. I think ham would be a great addition as well.
Ingredients
- One roll crescent roll dough (I find Pillsbury works better than the store brand)
- One block cream cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 4 think slices or prosciutto or 12 thin slices of salami or half of each
- 1/4 cup banana peppers, diced
- 2 tbsp pesto
Directions
- Combine cream cheese, pesto and diced banana peppers.
- Roll out crescent roll dough pinching seams together to make one large sheet.
- Spread cream cheese evenly across the dough.
- Sprinkle mozzarella over the cream cheese.
- Arrange prosciutto/salami evenly on top of cheese.
- On the long edge, roll the dough, pinching the seam at the end to prevent cream cheese mixture from escaping, forming a log.
- If you have time, freeze the dough log for 30 min or so. This is not necessary, it will just make it easier to slice.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Slice log into 1/4 inch pinwheels and place on a greased baking sheet.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until crescents begin to brown.
Gotta love an easy appetizer idea! I took these to several parties over the holidays and they were a big hit. If you liked this recipe, make sure to check out my Kentucky Hot Brown Pinwheels. What flavors should I try in a pinwheel next?

Do you cook the log, and then slice?
Or slice and then cook?
slice, then cook!
