30th Birthday Thoughts + Weekend

So I turned 30 on April 1st! I know the number doesn’t really mean anything and 30 isn’t that different than 29 or 31, but 30 just feels like a really big birthday. I had such a fun weekend celebrating with friends, so gonna share my special birthday day out and some thoughts on turning 30 below…

I’m not sure why, but since my teens, 30 always seemed like that magic number in my head that I would be a real “grown up”. I think about the fact that my parents had me before they turned 30 or of my older colleagues when I first started working who seemed like they really had things together. Or maybe I watched way too much ’13 Going on 30′ (love that movie btw). I was stuck on the idea that 30 was the deadline for being on my way in my career, growing my business and starting a family. I know that’s a ton of pressure to put on a person, and it wasn’t even like I felt societal or family pressure to do these things. I just always thought that I’d be ready for all of that by the time that I was 30, and now that I’m there, I feel really not ready. I guess I’m surprised that I don’t feel older. It’s almost like the older I get, the younger I feel internally. I shared a little about this on Instagram stories a few weeks ago and got several messages from people feeling the same thing, so if you’re weirded out by the big 3-0 too, please know you’re not alone!

Okay, now that you’ve gotten through my existential crisis 😉 let’s get to the fun stuff! Dave and I had a big trip planned a few weeks after my birthday, so I didn’t want to do anything too extra for the actual day. When my friends asked what I wanted to do, I said I really would like to just have a spa day, and they helped plan the best day! We started with brunch at Honeywood before heading to Woodhouse Day Spa. We reserved the private relaxation room, so we could all hang out together in between treatments. Woodhouse set up a little mimosa bar and charcuterie board for us and I just loved being able to chat with my friends in between getting a relaxing facial! I did the Illuminate facial and felt very glowy afterwards.

After a day of pampering, we headed downtown to 21c Museum Hotel for a girls night. We checked into an amazing corner suite (disclosure, 21c comped our stay) where my friends had set up fun balloons and treats. After an obligatory robe photoshoot, we got ready for dinner at Lockbox. Side note, it had been such a long time since I had gotten ready for a night out with girl friends. I was transported back to the days of roommates and college nights out crammed into a bathroom together doing hair and makeup and it was just so much fun.

We had a delicious dinner at Lockbox and got to check out the newly renovated dining room. I love that they added booths to make it feel a bit cozier, and huge trees in the center of the dining room. I love dining at Lockbox, because the setting is just as beautiful/fun as the food. I also recommend grabbing a drink and walking through the galleries before or after dinner. We had so much good food.. the highlights were the Share Board appetizer, Steak Frites, and Olive Oil Cake. We were very full, but managed to head over to Harvey’s for a few drinks before heading back to our cozy room and staying up for a while talking as girls nights typically turn out.

I loved waking up in a very comfy bed and opening our curtains to a view of downtown Lexington and the courthouse. We ordered room service breakfast (I had to have more of that pimento cheese and biscuits!) Overall it was a such a fun and special weekend. While I’m feeling a little weird about 30, I believe every year we’re granted on this earth is a gift and something to be celebrated. I’m so grateful to everyone who made me feel so loved and celebrated on my birthday! And thanks again to 21c for hosting us for the best girls night.

    Hi Leela,
Love your blogs. Do you ever write about cookbooks? ‘A Few Miles South’ by Ouita Michel, owner of
Honeywood and seven other restaurants. I see Honeywood was part of your 30th birthday celebration.
I can have my daughter, Lauren Carleton Paget, Ouita’s marketing director send you a copy, if you wish.
In the near future, Ouita will be collaborating with a celebrity NY Times best selling author, to start a book club. Ouita ‘s new brand name is Holly Hill, after her first restaurant, Holly Hill Inn in Midway.

    • Thanks so much Taryn! I have thought about doing a cookbook club or review, will definitely keep that in mind. I actually just got Ouita’s cookbook, but haven’t gotten to try any recipes yet.. will have to soon! Sounds like such a fun job, feel free to have your daughter reach out at any time 🙂 I’ll keep an eye out for the book club!
