Happy Derby week friends! Derby in Kentucky means Derby Pie, which is a chocolate and walnut pie. It was created at the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky, (outside of Louisville) by George Kern with the help of his parents. I think it’s best served warm, nice and chocolatey! I wanted to come up with an easy ode to the Derby Pie and me being me, decided to see if I could do something with crescent dough and came up with these Derby Pie Bars.
These bars came together very easily with just a few ingredients! Derby Pie is traditionally made with walnuts, but you could easily sub pecans if that’s what you have on hand. You can use semi-sweet, milk or dark chocolate. I did a mix of semi-sweet and dark. These bars are definitely best served warm, but they reheat well so you can just zap one in the microwave. Still delicious at room temp though 😉 Try serving with a little whipped cream, or to really take things over the top, make fresh whipped cream with some Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream!
Derby Pie Bars
Ingredients
- Two rolls crescent roll dough (or crescent sheets work best!)
- 2 cups chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp butter, melted
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 and grease a 9×11 baking dish
- Spread one of the crescent roll doughs in the bottom of the pan, pinching seams together so you have a flat sheet
- Layer with chocolate chips, then walnuts
- Pour sweetened condensed milk over top, then sprinkle with salt
- Spread the remaining can of crescent roll dough over top, pinching seams together so you have a flat sheet
- Brush dough with melted butter
- Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown
- Let rest for 20 minutes before cutting
So easy, but so good! These are great for Derby season, but delicious year round 😉 If you’re looking for more Derby inspo, check out this post for lots of recipes or this one for how to throw a Derby de Mayo party.
Biscuits & blessings,
