Five Fun Things: September 2021

Hi friends! Every month(ish) I share one of these posts with things I’m reading, watching, loving etc. as a way to share a more personal update. Check it out below!

What I’m Reading

Since I haven’t done one of these over the summer, I’ll share a couple books a read over the past few months I really loved and some that were just okay. I LOVED The Lilac Girls, and if you enjoy WWII historical fiction you need to check it out! I loved The Jane Austen Project, a fictional take on going back in time to meet Jane Austen. I also loved The Swans of Fifth Avenue, a novel about New York’s socialite “Swans” of the 1950s—and a scandalous friendship between Truman Capote and Babe Paley supposedly based in truth. I really enjoyed The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, although it was kind of a sad story, but with an uplifting ending. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine was a really heartwarming story and easy read. I liked City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert, a love story (ish) set in NYC in the 1940s, but wouldn’t have called it my favorite, I wanted it to be a happier ending I guess. I also read Nine Perfect Strangers and have mixed feelings about it.. it was an intriguing read, but a kind of outlandish story. It kept me engaged the whole time and had a satisfying ending, but I just didn’t buy the storyline if that makes sense.

What I’m Loving

I can’t remember if I’ve told y’all about my sleep headphones, but they are truly the best thing I’ve ever bought. It’s an eye mask with bluetooth headphones so you can listen to something while falling asleep. I’m a physco and can’t sleep in silence, so I usually fall asleep to Netflix. I don’t love having the light of tv on though, so this is the best of both worlds! I also finally caved and splurged for a Lele Sadoughi headband. They can be kind of pricey, but are the comfiest headbands I’ve worn and actually stay put. I found this one on sale I’m about to snag as well. This one would be perfect for a bride

What I’m Listening To

I’ve mostly been listening to a lot of Kygo and Heather McMahan’s podcast lately, ha! I loved this episode of the Christy Wright podcast about marriage with Kailey and Russell Dickerson. I also highly recommend Jennie Allen’s podcast with ‘Pastor X’ regarding the underground church in Afghanistan.

What I’m Watching

I don’t know why I made this a category for these posts because I barely ever watch anything new! I started the new season of Outer Banks, but can’t handle more than an episode or two at a time. This season is much more dramatic and violent than the first one and it just hasn’t hooked me the same. I watched In The Heights on a plane and really loved it! The style of music reminds me of Hamilton for sure.

Where I’m Giving

Dave and I live by the 10, 10, 80 rule (of your income save 10%, donate 10% and live off the 80%), and I try to make that a tenant of my business as well. Over the last month, as I’m sure many of you, I was devastated by what’s happening in Afghanistan. I decided to give to Catalytic Ministries after listening to this podcast with Jennie Allen about the underground church in Afghanistan. Dave and I are also giving to the 22 Oats Strong GoFundMe for UK linebacker Chris Oats, who has been battling a serious medical condition since May of 2020.
