Sharing one of my family’s favorite recipes today, Pizza Ryes! This recipe originated with my great grandmother and my mom makes them every holiday season. My mom thinks they were actually served at her wedding (her mom and grandmother made all the food). Pizza Ryes are made with ground beef and spicy Italian sausage mixed with cheese. You spread this mixture on party rye bread, which is just a mini rye bread – Pepperidge Farm makes some. Then throw them in the oven and bake! They are the perfect appetizer for entertaining or tailgating. They’re easy to eat, filling and always a crowd pleaser. They’re also a great recipe to prep ahead of time and freeze for later. If you don’t like spicy you can just use regular Italian sausage, or cut the amount of red pepper flakes in half.
Pizza Ryes
Ingredients
- 1lb ground beef
- 1lb Italian pork sausage (spicy if desired)
- 1lb cheese (I like Velveeta, my mom prefers shredded cheddar)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 2 packs party rye bread
Directions
- Brown beef and pork sausage together, season with garlic powder, red pepper flakes and oregano
- Drain pan and add cheese, stir until cheese is melted and fully combined
- Preheat oven to 350
- Spread a spoonful of the meat mixture on each slice of party rye bread and arrange on a baking sheet
- Bake for 10-12 minutes until bread is toasted
- *If you want to prepare these ahead of time, bake for just 8 minutes, then freeze and store in a ziploc bag. When ready to serve, thaw and heat in the oven.
My friends always ask if my mom is going to make Pizza Ryes for our family holiday party, they are that memorable! I wish I had some in my freezer right now 😉 If you like this recipe, also check out my Sausage Pinwheels, Cheesy Sausage Squares, and Green Chili Cheesy Sausage Cups.
